In 1969, Dr. Gerard K. O’Neill asked a group of freshman students at Princeton University a question that would change the course of history. He asked, “Is the surface of a planet really the right place for an expanding technological civilization?” Their research proved the answer to be “No,” and further study showed that the best place for an expanding technological civilization was in rotating space habitats in low-Earth orbit at stable gravitational points known as “lagrangian points.” If achieved, these habitats could house hundreds of thousands of people to work and play in, and would be enormously beneficial to humankind. It could alleviate the strains of overpopulation, hunger, dwindling resources, and war.
That realization was O’Neill’s inspiration for writing this book, The High Frontier: Human Colonies in Space.
Its release sparked an enormous grassroots movement to “open the high frontier” to make space available and beneficial for all humankind. The decades following the initial release of this book inspired an entire generation of free thinkers and young minds known as “Gerry’s Kids”, now leaders of the modern day space industry. The contents of this book, the legacy of “Gerry” and his vision of his “O’Neill Cylinders,” are now captured in the award-winning documentary film, “The High Frontier: The Untold Story of Gerard K. O’Neill.”
